8 Movie Deaths So Gruesome They Had To Happen Off-Screen
3. Death By Repeated Head Trauma The Proposition
In John Hillcoat's paradoxically Australian western, violence is dished out with more relish than a Big Mac. Most of it's on-screen, because Hillcoat's happy to invade your nightmares - prepare yourself for the sight of the unforgiving butchery of John Hurt - but the single most brutal act in the film takes place between cuts. In pursuit of one of their captured number, bothersome outback gunslingers Arthur Burns (Danny Huston) and Samuel Stoat (Tom Budge) decide to hijack the local jail. The plan comes off with alarming ease, as Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) and Two-Bob (Tom E. Lewis) make off with the formerly imprisoned Mikey (Richard Wilson) and head for home. Arthur and Samuel, however, decide to stay behind and kill some time by having a quick word with the jailers. And by 'having a quick word', I mean they beat the jailers' heads into brain-jam, all the while thoroughly enjoying themselves. Still, at least we don't see the process - just the horrifying aftermath. It's gonna be a mother to clean.
Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
