8 Movie Heroes You Didn’t Realise Were Actually The Sidekicks
3. The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy – Aragorn Is The Sidekick To Frodo
When all the epic battles and effects are stripped away from The Lord Of The Rings movies, it’s the relationships between the characters that really matter. The movies would just be empty, boring spectacle if the audience wasn’t engaged by the people they’re following (as The Hobbit trilogy helpfully proved).
Amongst the cast, Viggo Mortensen is the most obvious leading man. His Aragorn is a rugged warrior, a natural born leader but also unafraid to show his feelings for his true love. And he looks really cool swinging a sword around. But pretty much every action Aragorn takes in the trilogy is in the aid of helping out poor little Frodo, as he makes his agonisingly slow journey to destroy the ring.
Aragorn and the Fellowship are Frodo’s protectors for a time and, when the Fellowship splits, Aragorn does his best to make sure Frodo’s journey is as trouble free as possible. He does get to claim his rightful place as King and marry Steve Tyler’s daughter by the end, but in the grand scheme of the story he’s Frodo’s bodyguard. And a really awesome bodyguard at that.
