When 21 Jump Street was first announced people assumed it would be another lame adapation of an old show, but it surprised everyone by being one of the freshest comedies to come out of Hollywood in a long time.

This is down in no small part to directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who managed to mine comedy gold out of the premise. They paid attention to every little detail, like foreshadowing Johnny Depp’s surprise cameo by having him appear in disguise near the start of the movie.

Any amateur detectives in the audience will also be able to suss out the mastermind behind the HFS drug, since the movie drops a major clue early on. After Jenko and Schmidt try the drug for the first time, they note it tastes like Cool Ranch Doritos, which turns out to be an ingredient. Then the gym teacher Mr Walters comes by to talk to them, proudly clutching a Doritos bag.

It seems so obvious rewatching it, but it’ll likely fly over viewers heads the first time.
