5. How Does Levinson Upload A Virus Onto Alien Software? - Independence Day
The Plot Hole: If you've ever seen
Independence Day, you're probably a more awesome person as a result. You also might be aware of a rather bizarre plot point that allows Jeff Goldblum's nerdy character David Levinson to upload a virus he built on his Apple computer into an alien computer system that was not originally designed by Steve Jobs. Basically, it makes sense, but nobody really cares, because the movie interrupts your through process with Will Smith saying lines like "I've got to get me one of these!"
The "One Line" That Could've Solved It..."Their computers aren't that different to ours, you know - it's just a case of, uh, using their systems to design a virus that's compatible, translating it, uploading it, and uh, wham, goodbye Mothership." - David Levinson Or, you know, some other jargony sentence that sounds right coming out of Jeff Goldblum's mouth. Read that one in Goldblum's voice and already you start to believe that what I wrote is scientific as hell. It doesn't even make sense. My point with this one, though, is that we just needed the characters to acknowledge that the idea was insane, and then to give us some dialogue about how it's not as insane as we'd imagine, 'cause movies (I've also included two mentions of the word "uh," as is standard with any Goldblum dialogue).
