8 Movie Remakes That Pissed Off The Original Creators

Zack Snyder's movie directorial debut, the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead had some big shoes to fill, considering that George Romero's 1978 original is considered one of the best horror movies of all time, and one of the zombie genre's definitive works.

And while the remake does have its fans, Romero is certainly not one of them, and he's spoken ill of Snyder's effort on a few different occasions over the years.

In an interview with Simon Pegg in 2005, Romero said that the remake "lost its reason for being" after the first 15 or 20 minutes, while also calling it a "video game" and adding that "there was nothing going on underneath." Ouch.

Then, in a 2013 interview with The Telegraph, he continued his assault, saying that he just didn't like the remake very much, and that it completely missed the point of his original movie, which he felt could only have been done properly in the late 1970s.

Sadly, Romero passed away in 2017, so he won't get to see Snyder's upcoming film, Army of the Dead, another zombie flick. But considering that it's not a remake, perhaps Romero would've been a little bit kinder towards this one.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
