8 Movie Remakes That Pissed Off The Original Creators

The 2012 remake of Red Dawn had a hugely troubled road to the screen. Filmed at the end of 2009, it was initially slated for a 2010 release, but it was pushed back indefinitely when studio MGM encountered some serious financial difficulties.

The movie was then edited to remove China as an invading force, a move that was motivated by potential box-office gains rather than artistic merit. With all these delays and production issues, the buzz surrounding the movie wasn't all that good, and this negativity was compounded by the fact that John Milius - who wrote and directed the 1984 original - decided to publicly trash it in a March 2010 interview.

After reading the remake's script, Milius - who wasn't involved in the production - told the LA Times that he found the movie "stupid" and "terrible", adding that the filmmakers were more concerned with cool action scenes than a compelling story.

He also took shots at remakes in general, claiming that "No one wants their movie remade". In fairness, you can't really blame Milius for having this outlook, considering that Red Dawn - when it finally released in 2012 - was received rather horribly.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
