8 Movie Sequels That Cost LESS Than The Original (But Were Better)
1. Logan (2017)
The difference in quality between X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2013) and Logan (2017) is staggering. One is a ham-fisted attempt at an origin story which really should have been brilliant but ended up forced, over-stuffed and rather pointless. The other is a quiet, violent and mature character study masquerading as a brutal and uncompromising meta-action.
Wolverine cost an impressive 150 million to produce, and Logan, far superior in every conceivable way, cost around 100.
And it's easy to see why. Instead of relying on poor effects and off-base fighting scenes to cover up for a weak and uninspired plot, Logan is instead a clever and deeply affecting superhero drama in which the invincible hero is vulnerable and forced to do the right thing for a little girl (Dafne Keen) just like him.
Hugh Jackman is better than ever, the supporting cast (Keen, Patrick Stewart) are all brilliant, and the entire thing just goes to show that returning to basics and dialling down the story can work wonders in the right hands.
