8 Movie Sidekicks More Annoying Than Jar Jar Binks

1. George "Mac" McHale - Ray Winstone - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 41_ray_winstone It's not really Ray Winstone's fault that he emerged such an intolerable and pathetic whiff of sidekick energy throughout the course of Indy 4 - we'll put it down to David Koepp's naff script. By comparison, though, he's an embarrassment as far as Indy sidekicks go, given that he's up against the likes of Sallah (John Rhys Davies) and Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliot), and is basically given nothing to do. Mac is, as far as we can figure out, a double agent working so many political and personal angles that even he doesn't know which side he's on, and switches teams at any given opportunity, just 'cause, hey, why shouldn't he switch teams at any given opportunity? Though Spielberg's movie kind of attempts to explain the choices Mac makes throughout the course of the film, by the time we realize he's (probably) aligned with Indy after all, nobody cares. As if that wasn't enough East End-accented frustration to manage, when the ending comes around, Mac decides that - for reasons that go completely against the character the movie has attempted to establish - he wants to die, and makes a watery-eyed plea ("I'll be OK") for Indy to let him be sucked into a vortex and killed. This'd be fine if it made any sense at all. It's not like Mac's death would allow the portal to close or something, so that he was sacrificing himself and making peace with his old friend, or that Mac had (by the movie's logic, anyway) actually done anything wrong, and felt he deserved vortex death. Why does he want to die suddenly? There's seriously no reason. At this point, anyway, audiences had grown tired of this particular cockney mindf*ck, so it was nice to just see him dead. Agree or disagree with this list? Which movie sidekicks really grind your gears? Let us know in the comments section below.
