Hannibal Lecter was obviously the fiendish star of The Silence Of The Lambs, but even he pails into insignficance next to the real-life figure who inspired Buffalo Bill - the serial killer the good Doctor is employed to help discover.

In the film, Bill kidnaps and kills several women in pursuit of his infamous skin suit (and other human leather craft activities) and he's a pretty terrifying figure. But given that he was at least partly based on Ted Bundy, the portrayal made him a pussy cat compared to the truth.

He might have been horribly charming - to the extent that he's perversely considered a sort of psycho pin-up for fans - but Bundy killed at least 30 people between 1974 and 1978 and the details of what he did with his victims' corpses still shocks. Bill might have had aspirations to be a morbid fashion designer, but the film stops short of painting him as a necrophiliac butcher who kept souvenirs, ate parts of his victims and treated murder like a sport.
