8 Movie Villains Who Were Way Worse In Real Life

4. King Edward Longshanks - Braveheart

King Edward Longshanks is portrayed as a full-on bastard in Mel Gibson's Braveheart, and that possibly doesn't sit well with the typical, English view of him. In fact, history to the south of the borders suggests that Edward was one of the greatest ever kings, which isn't all THAT hard given the absolute shower that has sat on the throne over the years.

But Longshanks gets too much of an easy ride and the portrayal of him in the film probably doesn't go far enough - particularly if you're either Scottish or Welsh. He was so fearsome that the Dean of St Paul's fell dead in his presence when he wished to talk about the high-level of taxes, and he once tore handfuls of his own son's hair out when he demanded an earldom for his favourite Gaveston.

More troublingly, Edward was a raging anti-semite who expelled all Jews from England - a fact Mel Gibson curiously seemed unimportant in building the case against him. Instead, he claimed that Edward used his kingly right to Primae Noctis (bagsies on sleeping with a new bride) and banned bagpipes, which really aren't as important crimes, and which were nothing to do with him anyway.
