8 Movie Villains Whose Logic Makes No Sense

4. Spectre - Blofeld's Childhood Grudge

There are a number of things that made Spectre a disappointment, and while the twists of Andrew Scott being a baddie and Christoph Waltz playing Blofeld were obvious before you bought a movie ticket, the more curious twist came in the form of Bond's childhood history with the villain.

The reveal that Blofeld was Bond's adopted half-brother was a groaning twist of its own, but the real clincher is the motivations of Blofeld.

Because Blofeld's father showed the newly orphaned James Bond a little bit more attention than his own son, the fickle Blofeld manufactured a lifelong campaign of vengeance and terror, bleeding into his worldwide multi-layered terrorist organisation. Imagine being one of those boring blokes in Rome, and knowing all your villainous machinations were motivated by some guy's one-sided feud with his adopted step-brother.

"The author of all your pain..." doesn't sound like such a sinister line when you know it comes from one of the pettiest of grievances.

From a story perspective, Blofeld's evil mannerisms seem less threatening when you learn he is motivated purely by childhood jealousy - and as a character, his reasons for tormenting Bond for four films just don't make sense.

What's funny to realise though, is that had Bond been a little bit lazier of a hero, he would have probably never known his ultimate nemesis was his brother, and Blofeld's campaign of terror would have been to no audience at all. Sometimes, being a mad genius benefits no one including the mad genius.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
