7. Auschwitz (2011) - Uwe Boll's Bizarre Holocaust Movie
As one of the most horrifying events in human history, the holocaust is a subject that even the bravest and most respected filmmakers would probably shy away from - the chances at offending, or failing to do the subject matter justice, are extremely high. And yet the man who made BloodRayne, House of the Dead and Far Cry and is often hailed as being the worst director of all time woke up one day and decided that he'd make a movie about the horrors of Auschwitz. Can you imagine anyone less qualified? Kubrick once said that a successful film about the holocaust would be "unwatchable" - Boll's film is, but for different reasons entirely. With Auschwitz, Boll supposedly set out to show the true horrors of the holocaust - horrors that he believed movies like Schindler's List had sentimentalised. So what we get is an amateurish, dull and historical inaccurate film inclusive of all the worst Boll traits - including lots and lots of gratuitous violence. He also makes an appearance as a prison guard, for some reason. I'm sure Boll had good intentions when he came up with Auschwitz, but I'm also convinced he knew it would attract controversy and made it accordingly. As a German willing to tackle the subject head on, you might argue he's an appropriate director; as a filmmaker, there was no worser choice.
