8. A Good Year (2006) - Ridley Scott's Pleasant Rom-Com About A Holiday
I'm not one of those film fans who thinks that directors should only work in one genre - I love it when a director can work in all kinds of genres with equal skill. Think about Stanley Kubrick, or Danny Boyle, or Ridley Scott. Oh, wait, no: take Ridley Scott out of there, because I'm not sure that he can, actually. Okay, so he can do action in most
genres - be it sci-fi, fantasy, historical epic, whatever - but how about full-blown romantic comedy? Why in Prometheus' name would Ridley Scott want to make a romantic comedy, you're wondering? Has he even bothered? He did get a craving - just one time. The result was a relatively obscure little flick called A Good Year, whose plot can pretty much be described as "Russell Crowe drinks wine in the sun and flirts with Marion Cotillard." As far as I can tell, nobody really knows how this thing ended up happening. It's safe to say that Ridley Scott is far better-suited to pretty much any genre that isn't rom-com. If I'd given you the script for A Good Year, would Ridley Scott's name have even graced your list of fifty potential directors? That's how inappropriate his position helming this movie was then, and it shows. There's no spark, no passion - just an excuse for a lovely holiday.
