3. John Carter
Now this is another example that quite offends me when it comes to the peoples reactions in regards to this awesome little sci fi adventure. The so called failure (I will get to that later) of this film to me is proof on how society have all turned into sheep who follow their little masters around like puppies. Why you ask? For one I have actually had someone say to me that this movie was crap, but then admitted to not even seeing the damn thing. And this has happened more than once. These people are the reason I don't frequent movie forums and message boards as they are quite simply everything that is wrong with society and deserve nothing less than a punch to the face. May the powers that be grant me considerable wealth one day so I can dispense my own real life Jay and Silent Bob type justice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsXKAtpLm4I This film is an epic sci fi saga that hearkens back to the day where such films were made for the entire family to enjoy, not just lovers of the source material. Much like Steven Spielbergs "ET" and "Jurassic Park" or the original Star Wars Trilogy. In fact, considering that George Lucas stole most of his ideas from the acclaimed author of these wonderful novels convinces me that this in no way should be compared to those movies, as you can't judge a film based on another that initially stole from the same source material. That is a type of madness only fanboys seemingly develop. Now granted, Taylor Kitsch hams it up a little but in all seriousness to anyone with an open mind, no more than Mark Hamill did as Luke Skywalker. And if you are going to compare it to ANY of the Star Wars canon, why not put it side by side with "The Phantom Menace." I don't know about you but I know which film I would choose if given the choice. "John Carter" has pretty much everything an epic like this should have. Stunning visuals, great action set pieces, a nice steady pace, is faithful to the source material and something the kids can get into without the need to worry about sexual innuendos, graphic violence or risque themes. I can't fathom why the general movie going public would rather spend their money on Michael Bays "Transformers" over something like this. Not to mention taking their children to see it, what with its Megan Fox soft core porn shots and totally unsuitable dialogue and imagery (not to mention the racially provocative overtone of "Revenge of the Fallen"). Not that is was much of a flop to begin with. With that in mind my next comment in regards to this film is directed solely at production companies and producers. If you are going to spend $300 million (this extends to X-Men, Days of Future Past) on simply making a movie, don't expect too much profit back. You are not making GTA5 and this is nothing like selling video games at $100 a pop. You are taking a risk on every film you ever make. And considering that films, even some that are classed as "blockbusters," only barely surpassed the $500 million mark themselves (just look at "The Wolverine", didn't come close). I think earning $300 million for a single movie could be classed as a success, and yes, even if you were foolish enough to spend that much on it in the first place. And considering the only place where it was ACTUALLY A FLOP was the United States doesn't say much. They spent $130 million dollars of their earned hard cash on seeing "Grown Ups 2," so nowadays I wouldn't use the United States market as a basis for what you deem is quality filmmaking.
