3. Tombstone (1993)
Directed By... George P. Cosmatos
Secretly Directed By... Kurt Russell The filming of
Tombstone has become somewhat legendary for its disastrous nature, although - thankfully - the movie turned out all right in the end. But are the right people getting the praise they deserve for making that possible? Well, if you're of the opinion that Kurt Russell secretly directed the movie, which is the truth according to
True West magazine reporter Henry Cabot Beck, then they're not. Yes, Beck apparently stumbled upon this story whilst visiting
Tombstone's set. He found that, for some reason, Kurt Russell was calling the shots. In what has to be one of the most bizarre instances of ghost directing to have ever been made public, the story goes like this: when original director Kevin Jarre was fired, star Kurt Russell stepped in to pick up the slack as director. George P. Cosmatos, who directed the second
Rambo movie, was then brought in at the same time to do follow the storyboards that Russell had worked out for him. Beck agreed to keep this all a secret until Cosmatos' death, and honoured that pact until in 2005, when Cosmatos passed, he revealed Russell's true role to the world.
