8 Movies You Wrongly Thought Were Sequels
3. Troll 2
Somewhat infamously in the video game world, the version of Super Mario Bros 2 released to the Western market was in fact a disguised Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, which was repurposed to take advantage of interest in the Mario brand when it became clear that the originally planned sequel wasn't going to be viable. They basically slapped on the name and the characters and expected nobody to really notice (or to care).
The same trick was attempted by US distributors when they were handed the movie Goblins. Clearly not confident of the film's ability to succeed as an independent under its own power, they renamed it Troll 2 after the1986 original, which had made more than $5m from a relatively small $700k budget.
Anyone who was tricked into believing it was a sequel would have noticed immediately that it wasn't one. The two films have no connection at all, and the title is a complete misnomer, given the lack of any actual trolls.
