8 Musicals Being Made Into Movies (And Why You Should Care)
3. Jersey Boys
The Musical: Jersey Boys tells the real-life story of the 1960s rock group The Four Seasons in, well, four seasons on stage, each season representing one of the band members take on the rise and fall of the group. The classic rags-to-riches-to-rags story follows the characters throughout their tumultuous musical journey. Opening in 2005, the biographical musical was critically acclaimed, receiving the Tony Award for Best Musical. Why The Movies Worth Watching: The film adaptation, coming out tomorrow, is directed by Clint Eastwood and stars original Broadway cast members in principle roles, notably the immensely talented John Lloyd Young as lead Frankie Valli. However, its hard to tell with this one, notably because the show caters precisely to the typical middle-aged theatregoing audience, and thus could be a bit of a tough sell to the average cinemagoer, as its plot may lack that certain impetus that film often requires. That said, however, Jersey Boys boasts an infectious, rocking 60s jukebox score, including famous numbers like Big Girls Dont Cry and Oh, What A Night, that gives the story and characters a texture and vividness that has transported theatre audiences for years. With a setting in a dynamic yet nostalgic historical and musical time period and a distinctive Behind-the-Music storytelling style, it will hopefully be able to stand out in the hall of movie musicals.
