8 Myths About Classic Movies You’ll Be Shocked To Hear Are False

6. Back To The Future: Part II

BTTFThe Myth: The film successfully predicted the 1997 World Series. Obviously we won€™t have hoverboards by 2015 and they really need to get moving on the next fifteen Jaws films, but Back To The Future did correctly predict one thing; in one scene, it is referenced that the then non-existent Miami team (the Marlins) would win the 1997 World Series. Crazy, huh? The Shocking Truth: It€™s a complete lie. In a similar vein to the recurrent meme that €˜today€™ is the day Marty and Doc Brown travelled to (it€™s thirty years on from €™85, it can€™t be that difficult Internet), this was spread thanks to a few liars and plenty of gullible people unwilling to check facts. The Miami Marlins did indeed win the 1997 series, but the film makes no reference to them; the closest comes when Future Marty sees the Chicago Cubs winning in 2015, playing off their terrible form. This rumour grew on the back of the Marlins€™ win, spread over new information thing €˜the Internet€™ by those unable to corroborate the facts with the film (see Nagini the python is the boa constrictor Harry Potter released in the Philosopher€™s Stone). This has shockingly recurred a couple of times since with other teams.
