8 Notoriously Bad Comic Book Movies With Overlooked Positives

3. Constantine (2005)

constantineThe Movie: When making a movie about a broody character with limited emotional capacity, Hollywood producers will often look straight to a couple of popular actors when considering who to cast in the role: Keanu Reeves, or a plank of wood. Hollywood usually opts for Keanu, because he has a face (which helps), thought that plank certainly has an edge (four, in fact). This is what happened when Constantine was made, a movie which tells the story of John Constantine, a cynic who can talk to half-angels and half-demons, and was panned for its relative goofiness and, um, "unconvincing" lead performance. Overlooked Positive: Aesthetically speaking, I think this movie was right on the money. The production values are near enough awesome, and the film really captures the noir-ish tone of the original comic book. It's a shame that what's happening in these frames isn't particularly good on interesting, but the design here is top notch. Does that excuse the fact that Constantine sounds like a cross between a laxative and a bedtime drink? I'm not sure it does.
