8 Notoriously Bad Comic Book Movies With Overlooked Positives

4. The Green Lantern (2011)

green_lantern_2011_movie-HDThe Movie: Remember when you went to the movie theatre to see The Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by the guy who did Casino Royale? You don't? Me neither. Which is exactly the reason why this planned franchise probably won't wind up getting another installment: everybody that did go to see the movie thought that it sucked. And not that many people went to see it (it made a profit of $19 million at the box office - yikes!). Now back to those who thought it sucked: a fair enough opinion, really. For the most part, it does. It sucks incredibly well. It is extremely good at sucking. The narrative, which concerns a guy named Hal Jordan who gets a magic ring and becomes a superhero, is about as confused as Jar Jar Binks trying to solve a Rubik's cube on a tricycle, whereas the screenplay itself is currently first in line for "things we should burn for fuel when the apocalypse comes." Bad movie. Very bad movie. Overlooked Positive: I'm not going to try and convince you to watch this one, to be honest, because I appreciate that you've read this far and I think we know each other well enough for me to be honest with you. So whereas The Green Lantern is not a good movie, there is something that it deserves to be praised for: its special effects. They're kind of mind-blowing. And though the movie itself deserves to be entombed forever in an underground cavern, the special effects team really did a great job with all the alien characters and the space stuff and the explosions. So this goes out to you Green Lantern SFX team: all that awesome CGI you did was a complete waste of time. Maybe I should rephrase that? No time. Sorry.
