8 Oscar Nominees With Secret Music Careers

2. Michael Fassbender

Are there a whole lot of things that Michael Fassbender can't do? I sort of hope deep down that he's a terrible speller or can't ride a bicycle, just to make up for the fact that he seems to be good at pretty much everything. Including acting (he's nominated this year for his portrayal of visionary Apple founder Steve Jobs, adding to last year's nomination for 12 Years A Slave), speaking fluent German, and apparently singing. There are lots of clips of him singing floating around on the internet, mostly from various interviews, but his big opportunity to show off his musical side came when he was offered the titular role in Lenny Abrahamson's Frank. He plays the idiosyncratic leader of an experimental rock band called The Soronprfbs, who are as dysfunctional as they are deeply devoted to each other. Frank's songs, sung from within a giant papier-mâché head that Fassbender wears for the majority of the film, have an improvisational, Zappa-esque quality to them that make them at the same time bizarre and endlessly fascinating. The seemingly limitless talent of Michael Fassbender, of course, goes a huge way in making the most likeable songs ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_2HaVGvXdg
