8 Plot Threads To Continue In Captain Marvel 2

3. The Skrulls

The rug was thoroughly pulled from under our feet with the Skrulls. They were given heavy marketing focus and seemed the perfect building blocks for a Skrull Invasion phase, where they replaced Thanos as the Avengers’ biggest threat, hiding in plain sight.

Instead, Captain Marvel went in a decidedly different direction. Even those expecting a twist seemed to be thinking that perhaps Yon-Rogg, Minn-Erva or another of Danvers’ crew was going to be secretly a Skrull in disguise. However, the movie opted for something much more symbolic, and gave us the sharpest piece of social commentary the MCU has ever done.

It turns out that the Skrulls were not terrorists at all, but refugees forced to flee their home world because of invasion and militaristic destabilisation. Because they behaved differently and because Danvers never heard their side of the story, it was easy to paint them as the wrong doers.

They were the evil ones, and the Kree were just doing their duty in wiping them out.

Replace the Skrulls with Syrians or Muslims and it’s easy to draw parallels to modern society. Seeing families reunited was a touching moment, and hopefully their arc will continue in the sequel.
