8 Possession Horror Movies That Broke All The Rules

1. REC

No, there hasn't been a mix up - REC is supposed to be on this list.

I know it might look wrong - after all, it's no doubt featured front and centre on plenty of lists we've done about zombies - but what makes the story of this seminal found-footage horror so captivating is that it blends elements of both zombie stories and possession stories.

That's because, it's revealed towards the end, the virus infecting the inhabitants of this quarantined apartment building is itself a form of demonic possession. The monsters aren't the living dead, but actually the result of an exorcism that went wrong and essentially allowed demonic possession to become a contagious illness.

There's also a weird worm involved that slips down your throat. It's much scarier than it sounds.

So, while The Wailing flirted with a similar idea of making demonic possession an illness, REC totally committed to that idea, and gave us a wholly original genre-bending horror.
