8 Possible Futures For The Spider-Man Movie Franchise
4. Leave Spider-Man For Side Characters
Another of the rumours Faraci reported states that the Spider-Man series will jettison its titular hero for the foreseeable future and instead turn its focus to turning supporting characters into big marquee names. Hey, if people can be clamouring for a Black Widow movie then why not? The Sinister Six (assuming it doesn't have a Spidey, Garfield or otherwise) is the obvious start to this, but there's enough set up already to keep us busy into the 2020's. Black Cat, whose alter ego, Felicia Hardy, was played by Felicity Jones in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has already been rumoured for a movie, but there's also Alistair Smythe, the Oscorp suit played by B. J. Novak who disregards Max Dillon, who has a supervillain future. That that future rest heavily on the presence of Spider-Man (he's the creator of the Spider-Slayers) highlights a major problem with this direction. As Marvel have shown, people actually quite like hearing stories they don't know by rote (why else do you think The Incredible Hulk was their lowest grossing film), so focusing on characters general audiences aren't really familiar with can remind us all why the character and his world has remained popular for fifty years. Of course, the real genius of this idea is that it not only keeps Marvel from getting their mits on the series, but it also keeps the potential of Garfield; assuming his four-film contract isn't time constrained, they can bring him back at whatever point they want.
