8 Problems Nobody Wants To Admit About Star Wars: The Force Awakens
3. Kylo Rens Real Name Being Ben Doesnt Make A Lot Of Sense
Yes, it was f*cking awesome when Han shouted "Ben!" across that chasm. Fans the world over were obviously thinking 'holy smokes! That's Obi-Wan Kenobi's name!' and sat there, grinning ear to ear at JJ's callback to A New Hope, and how cool it is that Leia and Han named their kid that. But then... the realisation sets in that the only one who called Kenobi that, was Luke. Leia refers to him as General Kenobi, and to my recollection, Han only calls him 'old man'. The emotional connection to the alias of 'Ben' belongs to Luke, and Luke alone. Kevin Smith recently made the point that it was essentially Kenobi who brought Leia and Han together, I would still argue that if anything they would then name the kid Obi-Wan. He would have been General Obi-Wan Kenobi to Leia, and even though Uncle Luke would have been around to say 'hey, you know he liked to be called Ben, right?', for most of his life, he was Obi-Wan. And Leia would've known that. Admittedly, this is a minor nitpick, but I found it so glaring that it ultimately took me out of what was a strong, emotional moment in the film.
