8 Problems Nobody Wants To Admit About Star Wars: The Force Awakens
2. The Mysteries Are Annoying And Offensive
This goes hand in hand with the point that The Force Awakens should stand on its own as a film, without leaving things open-ended for one or two sequels. Although The Empire Strikes Back had a cliffhanger ending, it's a different animal; the question marks on Empire's ending were mainly 'will they save Han Solo?' and 'how is Luke going to defeat Vader now that he knows that is his father?'. They're fun cliffhangers that aren't too frustrating; they simply ensure that viewers are brought back to theaters for the third and final instalment, because we know that they'll save Han Solo and Luke will find some way to deal with his newfound family drama. They're good guys; they win. The Force Awakens' cliffhangers and mysteries are enough to have you tear your hair out. Partly because fans have waited for three, long years to discover who these new characters (Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren) actually were. We debated and theorised and went a little crazy in the process, the constant guessing and pondering affecting anyone with a passing interest. The time finally came, and we only got real, solid answers for one of those previously-mentioned characters. It's basically a slap in the face to all those who adopted an investment in the characters from the moment their names were announced. Now, we as fans are expected to wait another year-and-a-half for answers to who Rey is, who her parents are, and whether or not Finn has any greater connection to the mythos. It's a bit of a piss-take.
