5. Doctor Strange Proved Superhero Movies Can Ask Big Questions

The majority of Marvel's output has kept things light and fun without asking audiences to ponder too deeply about the action unfolding on the screen. The Captain America franchise took some stabs at political topicality; however, Marvel took pains not to let the politicking get in the way of its mission to be a nonstop fun-machine.

Unlike the rest of its Marvel brethren, Doctor Strange hit pause on the action a few times to give its characters a chance to ponder some big questions like humanity's place in the universe and the impact Strange's dimension-hopping had on the nature of existence.

Not since The Matrix has a blockbuster fused heady philosophical questions with razzle-dazzle special FX so successfully. Audiences gave Strange a stellar 'A' grade on Cinemascore, proving that all the highfalutin talk about astral planes and life's meaning didn't detract from their enjoyment of the film.

Strange's successful marriage of entertainment and philosophy could very well start a trend of thought-provoking blockbusters that don't shy away from asking audiences to think about the big picture while munching on their popcorn. Hopefully, Strange isn't a one off and Marvel continues to explore rich thematic territory in a rewarding way.
