2. It's A Thankless Task, And The Fanboys Will Hate Him Either Way
Perhaps it's pessimistic to look at things this way, especially given how difficult it's already going to be to give the Star Wars franchise momentum once again, but even if J.J. Abrams directed a masterful Star Wars movie, you just know that fanboys will be screaming, "It's not as good as the originals", even in the unlikely event that it exceeds them in quality. Meanwhile, Star Trek fans will go on calling him the deadbeat dad of movie directors, who makes a family but doesn't stay around to raise the kids... Essentially, Abrams is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't; he's going to annoy a large fanbase of nerds either way, though on the bright side, he's unlikely to ever become a George Lucas-level pariah when someone as talented as Michael Arndt has written the script.
