7. Mission Impossible Doesn't Conform To The Reboot Mould

The release of Batman Begins in 2005 reshaped the approach to blockbuster movies. Batman Begins was followed by a (so far) decade-long wave of €œgritty€ reboots€” Star Trek, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Amazing Spider-Man, Man of Steel, Dredd, Snow White and the Huntsman, Evil Dead, Dracula Untold, Fantastic Four, and of course Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig as the newly-minted double-O. Like Batman Begins, Casino Royale functions as an origin story of the James Bond persona, though a pretty uneven one. Taking another cue from Nolan€™s Batman, the Bond team attempted a sustained narrative dealing with Vesper Lynd and Mr. White between Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. It€™s safe to say that story fizzled out. Finally, Skyfall was explicitly influenced by The Dark Knight€™s tricky villain-driven plot structure. Meanwhile, it seems that Mission:Impossible is, and always has been, cool doing its own thing. If anything, the franchise has lightened up over time, which is a breath of fresh air.
