8 Reasons Upgrade Is The Year's Best Venom Movie

5. The Tone Is Far More Consistent

One of the biggest criticisms about Venom is its constantly wavering tone: there's precious little reconciliation between its wildly goofy moments and its more serious and violent ones.

As a result audiences may be left wondering what they're supposed to feel a lot of the time, and whether some of those outlandish moments are really supposed to be funny at all.

Upgrade meanwhile manages a brilliant balance of light and dark, hewing away from any potential grim self-seriousness and making the most of Grey and STEM's hilarious burgeoning relationship.

Whannell never lets things get too silly and keeps the humour firmly of the gallows variety, allowing it to accentuate the brutal violence rather than undermine it.
