8 Reasons Upgrade Is The Year's Best Venom Movie

2. The Plot Twists Are Genuinely Surprising

There's almost nothing surprising about how Venom unfolds: Eddie and the symbiote ultimately end up facing off against a boring corporate honcho (Riz Ahmed) who becomes infected with a symbiote himself, and he wins at the end.

Even the climactic reveal of Woody Harrelson's Cletus Kasady doesn't rouse more than a shocked chuckle at that wig, and overall the film's big reveals end up feeling howlingly rote and predictable.

Upgrade conversely does a fantastic job of leading the audience in one direction for most of the movie before pulling the rug out, delivering a legitimately shocking twist in the process that keeps the movie dynamic and highly compelling all the way to the finish line.
