8 Reasons Why Indiana Jones 5 Is (Probably) A Brilliant Idea

4. No Lucas

There is a lot wrong with Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, but one of the biggest ingrained problems is the decision to make the mystical threat aliens; it doesn't fit in with the more religious elements of the first three movies, forces a contrived Roswell subplot, leads to an insulting message about knowledge and is, above all, just plain dumb. Beyond that, all other problems with the film seemed to stem from the idea of inter-dimensional beings, which was the basic pitch for the film. And that was all Lucas.

The reason a follow up to The Last Crusade took the better half of two decades is because Ol' Georgey was dead-set on having Indy face an extra-terrestrial threat and refused to sign off on a project until he got his way. Eventually Spielberg and Ford lamented (because Lucas had done such a good job with the Star Wars prequels?) and the boulder was rolling.

Now, credit where it's due, Lucas was integral in first bringing Indiana Jones to life - the serial throwback character was his idea, even named after his dog (oh yeah, that's a thing) - developing the story for each entry in the original trilogy and he worked closely with Spielberg throughout production, but at some point he lost sight of what made it originally work so well.

Thankfully, his name is nowhere near this project, his involvement being little more than a "Created by" credit. As with Star Wars, it's probably for the best he's sitting this one out.
