8 Reasons Why Indiana Jones 5 Is (Probably) A Brilliant Idea
3. No Recasting Means It's A Proper Indy Sequel
One of the most pervasive rumours surrounding Indiana Jones 5 pre-announcement was that the whip-cracking professor was going to be recast as a younger actor, allowing for full-force action and Nazi foes. The top candidate was Chris Pratt, which made sense seeing as he's already played Indiana Jones twice in Guardians Of The Galaxy and Jurassic World, and for a while this looked to be how the sequel was shaping up.
However, back during the press tour for Bridge Of Spies, Spielberg nixed these rumours, stating that "I dont think anyone could replace Harrison as Indy. I dont think that's ever going to happen", drawing a line under this happening indefinitely (what, was Pratt not up to snuff?).
A shame? Possibly, although the director's comments in reference to the constant recasting of Spider-Man and Batman do make a nice case; that's not what the character of Indiana Jones is. Pratt could very easily have delivered a great performance in a great Indiana Jones movie, but it could have equally completely missed the mark and left the series flapping about in reboot purgatory.
With Ford we have dependability and focus.
