8 Reasons Why The Suicide Squad Just Bombed At The Box-Office

1. The HBO Max Factor

The simple fact that U.S. moviegoers could use the HBO Max streaming service to watch The Suicide Squad at home for "free" means that many of them will have chosen to not see the film in cinemas.

According to HBO Max executive Andy Forssell (via THR), The Suicide Squad "boasted the second-most viewed opening of any film premiering day-and-date on HBO Max" (reportedly, Mortal Kombat earned the highest).

Basically, Warner Bros lost out on a decent amount of cash by electing to release the movie in homes and cinemas simultaneously. It's impossible to say how much cash exactly, but if three or four million households went the HBO Max route, that's millions of potential box-office dollars that have evaporated into thin air.

Considering that HBO Max's subscriber numbers are embarrassingly low (the company itself tries to make them sound much higher than they are), it's clear that this whole "day-and-date" thing hasn't really worked out. HBO Max isn't exactly booming, meaning that movies like The Suicide Squad are being sacrificed to help a streaming service that nobody seems to care about.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
