5. Baywatch 2
In this era of franchises leading the way and the old Hollywood star system no longer pulling the same weight it used to, one of the few exceptions to the rule tends to be Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. He revitalised Fast & Furious, brought back Jumanji; people will pay to see him in anything, right?
Well, no, apparently not all the time, as Johnson and studio Paramount learned the hard way with 2017's Baywatch. The tongue-in-cheek big screen adaptation of the cheesy 1990s TV favourite had its eye on the R-rated comedy market, as the casting of Bad Neighbours alumnus Zac Efron might reflect.
However, after being savaged by the critics (18% RT score), Baywatch didn't make anywhere near as big a splash commercially as hoped, managing a little short of $178 million worldwide off a $69 million budget.
As a result, the plans for further Baywatch films which had been revealed by the producers prior to the film's release are almost certainly dead in the water now. Not that Johnson is in too much need of another series to his name; and since the film's box office failure, Efron has implied he's not too proud of having made it in the first place.
