Was anyone really surprised when Luc Besson's 2017 adaptation of the 1960s French sci-fi comic Valerian and Laureline turned out to be a damp squib at the box office? As a megabudget big screen take on a largely forgotten property with a little known actor in the title role, it had John Carter written all over it from the get-go.

True enough, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was met with a very middling critical response (49% RT score) and global box office takings of just over $225 million; not great given it cost almost $180 million to make (the highest budget ever for an independent production), and a good deal more to market.

Even so, Besson made it clear from early on that he had high hopes for reuniting with Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne on further films based on Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières' long-running comic series.

Earlier this year it was suggested that a Valerian sequel might still happen as a Netflix Original film, after Besson's company EuropaCorp entered negotiations with the streaming giants to both buy up their back catalogue (which includes such franchises as The Transporter and Taken) and produce new movies specifically for the streaming platform.

Personally, I'll believe it when I see it.
