8 Scariest Twist Movie Endings That Will Keep You Up At Night

7. Skeleton Key

The Mist Ending
Universal

Rife with southern superstition, Skeleton Key is the story of a young hospice worker sent by a lawyer to look after an elderly couple in an isolated plantation house in Louisiana. Of course, in classic spooky stylings, it isn't long until Caroline discovers that a dark secret permeates through the building, and that history has not been kind to those that live there.

Caroline learns that two servants were lynched for performing a ritual on the previous owner's children, devout followers of Hoodoo magic, and that their presence isn't quite gone. Turning from a skeptic to a believer herself, the end of the film shows that this was the plan all along - the two servants body swapped with the children and lived out their lives before requiring new bodies, which Caroline and her lawyer have accidentally obliged to. Victims of another ritual - the clincher is that she had to believe in Hoodoo magic for it to have any effect on her. By investigating in the first place, she sealed her fate.

And by watching it, we might just believe it ourselves.

A well-thought twist combined with local folklore makes Skeleton Key all the more gripping, with a dark tone and sinister atmosphere looming over the film before an explosive ending, that will leave you far less inclined to trust old people ever again. Imagining your soul sucked out and plopped into a body five times your age is just depressing as heck.
