8 Scariest Twist Movie Endings That Will Keep You Up At Night

1. The Descent

The Mist Ending

If you never saw the original UK ending, then you haven't seen The Descent. A film about a group of female spelunkers getting lost in an unknown cave system, they accidentally stumble across a strange species of humanoid monsters - and as luck would have it, their favourite food is human flesh. You never meet a cave monster with a hankering for veggie burgers now do you?

Slowly picked off one by one as they attempt to make their escape, it's only Sarah that manages to make it out alive, killing her last remaining frenemy Juno and sprinting into the sunlight before reaching a truck, and eventually freedom on the open road. As she stops to take stock of what's happened to her, she turns and finds a bloodied Juno in the passenger seat - and the shock causes her to wake back up in the cave she'd thought herself free of.

It's a deliciously dark and upsetting ending, giving a glimmer of false hope after a particularly gruelling slog to finally reach the outside before wrenching it away. Being fair to the film's tone however, it seems almost criminal to NOT end on this hallucination breaking Sarah's mind, neatly encompassing the threads of mental health, revenge, and straight gory horror into one bitter finale.
