8 Scariest Twist Movie Endings That Will Keep You Up At Night
2. The Mist
Possibly the most harrowing horror film ending of all time, The Mist has rightly been covered in abundance by anyone and everyone since release in 2007, so if you've come this far without having it spoiled for you: let me go on right ahead and fix that.
The titular mist rolls in over a small town in Maine, and with it comes an impossible horde of horrific creatures. Trapping a whole load of folk in the local supermarket, a father, David, and his son, Nathan, have to fight off everything from giant, acidic spiders to disembodied tentacles before finally making their escape. Reaching a car with a few other survivors, the group ride out into the impenetrable fog, before running out of petrol and making the choice that death would be better than living in this strange new world.
5 survivors, 4 bullets. David kills his friends and young son to then offer himself up to the mist: but instead, the horizon clears, the army rushes in, and the day is saved. It's a completely jaw-dropping moment that can be physically felt through David's soul-churning scream, sick in the knowledge that if they'd waited five more minutes, everyone would have survived.
That's got to sting a little bit.
