6. Case 39 - The Succubus Child

Traditionally in folklore, a succubus appears as an attractive woman who seduces men, luring them away to suck the life out of them (literally). There is a specific Succubus in lore named Lillith: she hunts and seduces men before killing them with a kiss. Case 39 took a different approach then to this lore by featuring Lillith the Succubus as just a little girl.

The film’s Lillith feeds on energy in line with the lore, but doesn’t do it in the same way. She doesn’t just generally feed off ‘energy’ for one, she feeds off different specific emotions. For example she can feed off of the kindness of her foster carer Emily just as she can feed off of the fear of her victims.

In order to evoke the fear she wants to snack on, she can materialise things that her victims are scared of. She is able to implant false memories in people’s brains, able to make people hallucinate to the point of hysteria. Just with a phone call she induces a psychiatrist to kill himself, having him see hornets pour out of his body, swarming him.

It’s an interesting take on the Succubus I’m not sure really fits with the folklore, but at least the power is versatile and pretty cool!
