4. The Villains Are Using Chitauri Technology

All of Spider-Man's villains seem to have access to some pretty snazzy technology. From the Vulture's energy cannon which decimates the Staten Island Ferry to the Shocker's bus smashing power gloves, it all seems pretty advanced, even by Marvel's usual villainous standards.

There's a reason behind this which ties Homecoming very neatly into the wider MCU and explores the consequences of past movies. They're using repurposed Chitauri technology, which fans were introduced to in the first Avengers.

It's easy to see how resourceful criminals would be able to salvage some nifty alien weaponry from the rubble. This acts as a satisfying explanation for why a group of common bank robbers are using a giant laser to open a vault and also has the added bonus of giving Spider-Man something a bit more challenging than surly thugs to battle against.

This once again shines a spotlight on the actions of the Avengers in New York and the damage that has lingered long after the battle took place. It wasn't just a case of mass property damage, the city's rising crime rates featured heavily in Daredevil and Jessica Jones and now it looks like audiences are about to see another consequence of this decline in Spider-Man Homecoming.
