8 Spider-Man: Homecoming Plot Spoilers We Already Know

3. The Vulture Is A Bitter Ex-Soldier

The motivations behind the Vulture's actions in the Homecoming trailer are, at a glance, few and far between. He says a lot of menacing things and causes his fair share of mayhem but unless you look closely, you're likely to miss the numerous hints at his origin that are dropped.

Keaton will be playing Adrian Toomes who, in the comics, was an elderly former electronics engineer who built his suit as a means to regain his youth. This clearly isn't the route that Marvel Studios have taken, as with many other characters in the MCU, it seems that the name is just a jumping off point.

If you pay attention to the costume design you will notice that there are lots of references to the air force. Even when he isn't wearing his mask (which looks a lot like an adapted fighter pilot's helmet) and fur collared flight jacket, Keaton's character dons a green military style coat. This dress-code is also true of the team of bank robbers revealed to be under his command.

Then there's the small matter of his flying equipment. It looks suspiciously like a souped-up version of Falcon's wings which are explained to be experimental military technology.

Everything points towards the Vulture and his gang being disillusioned members of the US army that have turned to crime. Whether or not this is due to the actions of the Avengers isn't yet clear, but it would tie in Spider-Man's story to the wider arc and make a lot of sense given Marvel Studios' love of debating the morality of heroes.
