Poor Aquaman always the butt of every superhero joke. DC has made huge efforts in the past four years or so to redeem Aquaman from his place as a punch line. At the beginning of The New 52, Aquaman was once again put on the Justice League and was also given a solo title, written by fan favourite Geoff Johns. Although the Aquaman in this volume is aesthetically distinct from the preview images released of Jason Mamoa, theres little doubt that DC will be drawing on Johns run as a template for the upcoming film, as no other Aquaman story has received this level of praise or attention in years. Out of Johns 25-issue run on the series, volume two, collected as Aquaman: The Others, would be the best place to start for those looking forward to the Jason Mamoa film. Aquaman: The Others tells the tale of Aquamans first superhero team before he joined the Justice League, The Others. Johns establishes an interesting supporting cast, while also reworking Aquamans origin for the modern reader. Aquaman does not have a large rouge gallery; therefore, the upcoming Jason Mamoa film will most likely focus on Aquamans arch nemesis, Black Manta. In Aquaman: The Others, not only do you get a well fleshed out Aquaman origin but also a back-story for Black Manta as well.
