8 Stupid Movie Moments When Superheroes Spectacularly Dropped The Ball

1. Clark Kent / Superman 2 (Superman II) €“ Giving Up His Powers Just As General Zod Arrives Up On Earth

This has to be the case of worst timing ever. Lois Lane finally uncovers the truth of who Clark Kent is and to be with her, he takes her to the Fortress Of Solitude and gives up his powers. All well and good, but with three Kryptonian criminals suddenly arriving to enslave humanity, he couldn't have picked a worse moment. In fact, while Clark and Lois are snuggled up in his den of love (do all Fortresses of Solitude come equipped with these?), Zod, Ursa and Non are rampaging through the White House and declaring themselves overlords of humanity. In this movie-verse, Christopher Reeve's Superman has already established himself as the noble, pure champion of the people, so to give it up so easily makes you question whether he is truly up to the role. Sure, he loves Lois and sure even he couldn't have foreseen the arrival of these enemies, but as good a movie as Superman II is it presents us with the biggest example of a superhero dropping the ball. Still, after a resounding beating from a yokel in a diner, Clark still has his wits about him and succeeds in draining Zod and his followers of their powers, defeating them once and for all. Like many heroes (and versions of heroes) on this list, it is sometimes the biggest mistakes that drive them to find a better way to win the day. Of course Superman does, even if it costs him the love of Lois Lane and a couple of ensuing bad sequels to follow. Perhaps 1990s Batman should have seen that one coming. There you have it. Some of the biggest mistakes our beloved superheroes have committed on screen. That isn't to say any of these films are rubbish. In fact there are some finest superhero films made within this article (X Men: The Last Stand notably excluded). But with great drama comes great moments where our heroes fail and these are some of the biggest fails of them all. Do you agree? Am I being too harsh? Not harsh enough? Do you think I've missed an essential superhero from my list? Please let me know in your comments below!
