8 Superhero Films That Nearly Had Completely Different Directors
5. Black Panther - John Singleton
The original Black Panther was another 90s treatment that never came to be. The African superhero might have seen the light of day not as a Ryan Coogler project but one directed by Boyz n the Hood director John Singleton and starring Wesley Snipes.
It was a labour of love for Snipes. The actor (who would go on to star in Marvel's Blade films) was a lifelong fan of the comics and spent much of the decade trying to get the pet project of the ground. It was his belief that T'Challa's story would offer a positive, inspiring view of African culture in the era of L.A riots and the O.J verdict.
Snipes and his potential director Singleton didn't quite see eye to eye, however. The latter reportedly wanted to set the project in the Civil Rights era, giving the title a more literal meaning. In Singleton's version, T'Challa would be struggling to recruit his son to the Black Panther cause - not the most inspiring of plotlines. We can all be glad that Singleton's vision was doomed.
