8 Superhero Films That Nearly Had Completely Different Directors

6. Wonder Woman - Joss Whedon

James Cameron Spider Man
Warner Bros.

Whilst Joss Whedon hasn't had a shortage of opportunities to tackle major superhero franchises (helming both The Avengers and The Justice League), he's had a few slip through his fingers, too. Most notable was his pass at the Wonder Woman script; he spent at least two years in the mid-noughties writing the script and was gearing up to direct the feature when the project fell through.

Unlike the Patty Jenkins version, the bulk of which took place during and after WWI, Whedon's vision entirely takes place contemporaneously in the Gotham-lite city of Gateway. Steve Trevor is no longer a soldier, but a military aid worker delivering supplies to isolated communities. The film's villain is Strife, CEO of a munitions company bent on destroying the city.

As if having a project collapse wasn't humiliating enough, the script leaked in 2017 and was widely derided as sexist, with an underdeveloped and over-sexualised heroine. Ouch.
