8 Superhero Films That Nearly Had Completely Different Directors

2. The Wolverine - Darren Aronofsky

The 2013 film, based on Frank Miller’s 1982 “Wolverine” series, was ultimately directed in the safe hands of James Mangold. It could, however, have been helmed by the dark visionary Darren Aronofsky. For a while it looked likely, too; the director only left the project due to a messy and time-consuming divorce.

It's difficult to imagine just how different the project might have been. Of course, 2017's Logan showed off a darker side to Wolverine, but Aronofsky's films tend to offer a more psychological grittiness, full of anxiety and paranoia.

In fact, what we know about the script suggests it could have been even darker than Logan. Writer Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), described the first draft as "Kurosawa's Wolverine" and one of the best scripts he'd ever written, saying that it featured no other mutants than Wolverine.
