8 Surprise Horror Movie Sequels That Caught Fans Unawares

While M Night Shyamalan was widely celebrated for his rise from obscurity to international superstardom off the back of his massively acclaimed 1999 box office hit The Sixth Sense, the filmmaker is perhaps even more renowned for how rapidly he fell from grace.

After a succession of critical and commercial turkeys including The Village, The Lady in the Water and The Happening, it looked profoundly unlikely that the filmmaker once tipped to be the new Spielberg would ever get back on top.

Yet, ever devoted to those third-act twists, Shyamalan overcame his tarnished reputation with 2016's psychological horror Split - and, in so doing, he caught everyone unawares by revealing in the final scene that the film was in fact a stealth sequel to his 2000 movie Unbreakable.

Unlike many of his twist endings in the years since The Sixth Sense, Split's conclusion went down well, and paved the way to what many fans consider a long-overdue fully fledged Unbreakable follow-up, Glass.

The film, which recently wrapped production, will see the return of both Unbreakable's Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson, plus Split's James McAvoy and Anya Taylor Joy, and is poised to open in January 2019.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
