8 Surprise Horror Movie Sequels That Caught Fans Unawares
1. Hellraiser: Revelations
Arguments can be made that any ultra-low budget direct to DVD sequel to an existing horror franchise can be quite comfortably ignored from the off.
Even so, as one of the few 1980s horror properties to have avoided an outright reboot thus far, Hellraiser remains a series that many genre diehards keep a close eye on. As such, many were taken aback when 2011's Hellraiser: Revelations arrived.
The first entry in the Hellraiser series for 6 years, Revelations landed seemingly out of nowhere with very little word beforehand.
It soon turned out there were good reasons for this, as it had been made as quickly and cheaply as possible in the months before its October 2011 home entertainment release, seemingly for no other reason than to renew The Weinstein Company's hold on the rights.
Utilising the found footage approach, Revelations bore almost no relation to the films that came before it, not least because it was the first entry in the series not to feature Doug Bradley in the pivotal role of Pinhead.
The response from fans and critics was resoundingly negative - but even so, another cut-price sequel, Hellraiser: Judgment, has been released since.
