Cinematic universes are all the rage these days, and while many of them fail (R.I.P. Dark Universe), the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to make other studios believe that they can achieve similar results.

Warner Bros is one such studio, and over the last couple of years, the company has had a moderate amount of success with its loosely-connected slate of DC film projects, and now, the hope is to do something similar with Mortal Kombat.

A cinematic reboot of the franchise, Mortal Kombat is due to be released in April 2021, and if its reception is strong, then the plan is to create an interconnected universe of Mortal Kombat film projects, similar in nature to the MCU.

One of the movie's producers, Todd Garner, told Den Of Geek that the film was approached from the angle of "What would Marvel do?" with the goal being to establish a Mortal Kombat cinematic universe that stretches on for many years.

It's rarely a good idea to plan an entire franchise before the first film is out the door, but on the plus side, maybe Warner Bros has the utmost faith that Mortal Kombat will be a kick-ass movie. We'll find out quite soon!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
